Of course, we must understand that tree problems can vary in many ways even with the same species planted on the same site. Diagnosis starts with a very basic observation of the tree in its environment or mono-culture. “Before this happens, the Arborist must have a vast understanding of tree biology, the tree species, condition, tolerance, and a background of the landscape underground. ” – Drs. Neely and Watson. In some cases, the Arborist needs to do soil and/or tissue samples to determine the cause.
The next step is to treat or correct the cause of decline. In most cases, tree contractors will recognize one of the many symptoms, miss the others, and recommend treating that one symptom. This is not the way to go about long-term treatment and success. Always remember to determine cause before you treat symptoms.
Check your contractor and ask for qualifications. Be sure you have a person who has at least completed his or her Arborist certification. You can check through a Penn State County Extension office – Montgomery County 610-489-4315 or Bucks County 215-345-3283.
